Symbol meaning
The ring
A ring is completion. Something closes, finishes, or is promised. Whether that promise holds depends on one thing above all others: whether the band is unbroken. A closed ring is success and, near the handle, traditionally marriage. A broken one is an offer that will not bear fruit.

Where it sits changes what it says
The marriage reading belongs near the handle and nowhere else. This is the part most casual readers get wrong. A ring opposite the handle is a contract, a deal, a completed piece of work. Reading every ring as a wedding is how the tradition gets a reputation for telling people what they want.
A ring sitting next to a letter shape traditionally attaches a name to the promise. A ring with a gap facing the bottom of the cup is the least favourable version, read as something that will not close in the place you most want it to.
What it gets mistaken for
Rings and simple circles are different symbols. A circle is wholeness in the abstract and carries no promise. A ring has visible thickness, a band with an inside and an outside. If you cannot see a hole in the middle, you have a coin or a blob, not a ring.
Questions people ask
Does a ring in coffee grounds mean marriage?
Only near the handle, and only unbroken. Elsewhere in the cup it reads as completion or a successful agreement. The tradition is much narrower on this than the internet suggests.
What does a broken ring mean?
A temporary offer that will not last. Something is put in front of you and the tradition says it does not close. It is a caution, not a catastrophe.
Read the rest of the cup
A single symbol is never the reading. What sits beside it, and which zone it falls in, does most of the work. The love, people and figures page covers the whole family and how they combine, and how to read Turkish coffee grounds explains the zones from the flip onward.
