Symbol meaning
The fish
A fish is abundance. Money, or work going well, or something fertile and creative getting started. It is one of the strongest positive signs the cup can hold, and unlike most symbols it does not really have a bad version. A small fish is a small good thing. A big clear fish is a big one.

Where it sits changes what it says
Opposite the handle is where the fish is happiest, because that is the zone of career and money and the outer world. A fish there ties the luck directly to work and income. At the bottom it reads as household abundance instead, the kind that shows up as a full table rather than a bank balance.
Two fish together traditionally double the reading rather than splitting it. If one is clear and one is faint, the tradition takes the clear one as the real thing and the faint one as the version you are hoping for.
What it gets mistaken for
A fish and a leaf are close cousins in a cup, both being a pointed oval. Look for the tail. A fish narrows and then flares; a leaf narrows to a stem. If the shape sits in a dense field of grounds it is probably a fish, because leaves tend to appear alone.
Questions people ask
Is a fish the luckiest symbol in coffee reading?
It is among the best, alongside the star and the clover. The tradition does not rank them formally, but a clear fish opposite the handle is about as unambiguously good as a Turkish coffee cup gets.
What does a fish near the rim mean?
The rim is the present, so a fish there is abundance already underway rather than something on its way. Look for what it sits beside to see what is feeding it.
Read the rest of the cup
A single symbol is never the reading. What sits beside it, and which zone it falls in, does most of the work. The animals in the grounds page covers the whole family and how they combine, and how to read Turkish coffee grounds explains the zones from the flip onward.
