Birds and messengers
If the grounds leave you a bird, expect words. News, a letter, a call, a name spoken in another room. Nearly everything with wings is a messenger in the Turkish tradition, and the reading turns on what kind of message and how fast it flies.
Note the direction. A bird facing the handle brings the news to you. Facing away, the news leaves with someone else. A feather is softer than a bird, a vulture is patient and unwelcome, and an angel is protection more than prophecy.

Reading them together
The messengers change meaning by what they stand next to. A bird beside a ring carries news of an engagement or a promise kept. A bird over a coin is money news, and most readers will not commit to good or bad until they see whether the bird flies toward the handle.
A feather softens whatever it touches: beside a knife it turns a cut into a warning, beside a heart it is tenderness. The vulture only matters when it is close to another symbol, because it waits on that thing. And an angel near anything difficult is the tradition’s way of saying you will be caught if you fall.

What does a bird mean in Turkish coffee reading?
News, almost always. A flying bird is news moving fast. A perched bird is news that waits for you to act. Two birds together often get read as a conversation, or a rumor passing between mouths.
Is an owl in the cup a bad sign?
The old readers treat the owl with respect rather than fear. It stands for a warning heard at night, or wisdom that arrives late. If it sits at the bottom of the cup, it asks you to look at something at home you have been avoiding.
What if the bird shape is smudged or half formed?
Half-formed symbols read as things still taking shape. A blurred bird is news that has not been decided yet. Turkish readers say the cup shows the direction, not the verdict, and a smudge is the cup keeping its options open.
